Traditional & Modern Plaster Options
Traditional Three-Coat Plaster Over Wood Lath
The original plastering method used for centuries. Thin strips of wood (typically redwood or fir) are nailed horizontally across wall studs with small gaps between them. Three coats of lime or gypsum plaster are applied — the first coat keys through the gaps to create a mechanical bond. This system is still used in historic restoration and high-end custom homes where authenticity is paramount.
Advantages
- Authentic historic appearance and character
- Superior sound insulation
- Excellent fire resistance
- 100+ year proven lifespan
- Breathable — allows moisture vapor to pass
Considerations
- •Most labor-intensive system
- •Requires highly skilled plasterers
- •Highest cost ($12–$18/sq ft)
- •Longer installation time
Best for: Historic home restoration, period-accurate renovations, and premium custom homes
Three-Coat Plaster Over Metal Lath
The modern standard for exterior and interior plaster. Expanded metal lath is attached to framing, then three coats of Portland cement plaster (exterior) or gypsum plaster (interior) are applied. Metal lath provides a more consistent substrate than wood lath, and the three-coat system delivers exceptional strength and longevity.
Advantages
- Excellent durability and impact resistance
- More consistent than wood lath
- Suitable for curved and complex surfaces
- 50+ year lifespan
- Code-compliant modern system
Considerations
- •Higher cost than drywall ($8–$14/sq ft)
- •Requires skilled tradespeople
- •Longer installation than drywall
Best for: New construction, commercial projects, curved walls, and properties where durability justifies the investment
Veneer Plaster (Thin-Coat Over Blueboard)
A hybrid system where one or two thin coats of high-strength plaster are applied over special gypsum board (blueboard). This provides many benefits of traditional plaster — hardness, seamless finish, sound insulation — at a fraction of the time and cost. Veneer plaster is an excellent upgrade over standard drywall.
Advantages
- Faster than traditional plastering
- Lower cost than full three-coat ($5–$8/sq ft)
- Harder surface than drywall
- Seamless, elegant finish
- Good sound insulation
Considerations
- •Less durable than full three-coat plaster
- •Limited to flat surfaces (no complex curves)
- •Requires special blueboard substrate
Best for: New homes wanting plaster quality at reduced cost, high-end remodels, and commercial interiors
How We Install Lath & Plaster
Assessment & Material Selection
1-2 daysWe evaluate your project requirements — historic restoration, new construction, or remodel — and recommend the appropriate plaster system, materials, and finish. For historic properties, we match original plaster composition and technique to maintain authenticity and meet preservation standards.
Lath Installation
2-5 daysFor traditional systems, wood or expanded metal lath is carefully attached to framing at specified spacing and with appropriate fasteners. Lath must be properly tensioned and secured to prevent sagging. Corner beads, casing beads, and control joints are installed at all transitions. For veneer systems, blueboard panels are hung and joints are taped.
Scratch Coat Application
1 day + 2-day cureThe first plaster coat (approximately 3/8 inch) is applied with firm pressure to fully engage the lath keys. The surface is scored with a scarifier to create horizontal grooves for the next coat's bond. The scratch coat must cure under controlled conditions — kept moist and protected from rapid drying — for minimum 48 hours.
Brown Coat Application
1 day + 7-day cureThe second coat (approximately 3/8 inch) is applied and floated to a flat, true plane. This coat establishes the final surface geometry — any waves, bumps, or hollows will telegraph through the finish. Master plasterers use rod and darby tools to achieve the precision surfaces that distinguish plaster from drywall.
Finish Coat & Texture
1-3 daysThe final coat (1/8 to 3/16 inch) is applied with the chosen finish — smooth troweled, sand float, skip trowel, knockdown, Venetian, or custom textures. Finish work is the most demanding skill in plastering, requiring precise timing and consistent technique across the entire surface. This is where craftsmanship truly shows.
Curing, Inspection & Protection
2-3 daysCompleted plaster cures under controlled conditions for optimal strength development. We inspect all surfaces for consistency, flatness, and finish quality. Corners, edges, and transitions receive special attention. The completed work is protected during any remaining construction activities.

Where We Apply Lath & Plaster
Historic Home Restoration
San Diego has numerous historic neighborhoods — from 1920s Craftsman bungalows in North Park to Spanish Colonial estates in Rancho Santa Fe. Restoring original lath and plaster requires authentic materials and techniques that match the period. ELN Stucco's plasterers are trained in traditional methods that preserve your home's character and meet historic preservation standards.
Custom Residential Construction
Discerning homeowners building custom homes in San Diego's premium communities — Rancho Santa Fe, La Jolla, Del Mar, Encinitas — choose plaster over drywall for its superior quality, durability, and the refined aesthetic it brings to interior spaces. Plaster walls feel and sound different — they communicate quality.
Commercial & Retail Interiors
High-end restaurants, boutique hotels, medical offices, and retail spaces throughout San Diego use plaster walls and ceilings to create an atmosphere of quality and permanence. Venetian plaster, smooth troweled finishes, and custom textures elevate commercial interiors beyond what drywall can achieve.
Exterior Stucco & Plaster
The techniques of lath and plaster extend naturally to exterior stucco installation. The same three-coat system — scratch, brown, finish — is used with Portland cement-based mixes for weather resistance. ELN Stucco's plasterers apply the same craftsmanship to exterior stucco as they do to interior plaster.
Curved Walls, Arches & Architectural Details
Plaster excels where drywall fails — curved walls, arched openings, coved ceilings, and complex architectural details. Metal lath can be formed to any shape, and plaster follows, creating smooth, seamless curves that are impossible with flat drywall panels.
Plaster Repair & Patching
Existing plaster walls that have cracks, holes, or water damage can be repaired by skilled plasterers who match the original texture and finish. Proper plaster repair involves cutting back to sound material, re-lathing if needed, and building up new plaster in matching coats.
